Museum Work

The Science of Spying exhibit and more
Saturday, December 10, 2011

Erector Sets Inc. gets called on from other exhibit companies to collaborate on some interesting museum projects. We were excited when USA Inc. hired us to work on “The Science of Spying”. This exhibit was a traveling show in conjunction with the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis and the Science Museum of London. We built interactive walls and display cabinets with an added challenge in mind, that the pieces had to be reassembled in each new city.  Erector Sets was able to utilize our tight tolerances, attention to detail and the plans were all in metric!

USA Inc. utilized our services again when it came time to build exhibits for Louisiana’s Sci-Port Science Center. The museum is an interactive children’s museum, so you know the exhibits need to be built like tanks. One of the projects we built was the “Tool Cart” which housed safety glasses and hardhats for the kids.

Philadelphia’s Please Touch Museum was opened at its new location this month. In-Depth Inc. hired Erector Sets to help with the fabrication of some of the new exhibits. We built a variety of projects from handicap-friendly ramps, kindergarten learning rooms to railway station facades.

Navteq: Traffic.com

Studio Buildout
Friday, November 18, 2011

This month we are featuring some of the work we have done for our valued clients at Traffic.com. Following the successful completion of their Philadelphia based UPN57 set, we were called on again to design and fabricate the set of their new Chicago Operations Center at WMAQ TV.

The new Traffic.com studio is truly state of the art. It is equipped to provide traffic radio broadcasts to Traffic.com’s Chicago radio clients over high fidelity analog circuits as well as having digital recording abilities for their FTP clients.

Our designer Steve Davis was challenged to create a set that was not only functional, but would also serve to visually impress potential clients visiting the studio. We were extremely pleased with the end result, but more importantly, so were our clients. In a recent e-mail, Traffic.com’s Media Engineer, Jim Quinn said, “Look what you guys have created! How cool did this come out?” Customer satisfaction is our highest priority at Erector Sets.

Infantry Museum

Exhibit Building For Infantry Museum In Georgia
Friday, November 18, 2011

When our partners at In-depth Inc. got the blueprints for The Infantry Museum in Georgia, they called us in to collaborate. The job entailed everything from a WWI full-size trench to a walk-thru Vietnam jungle experience. The main exhibit chronicled all the wars that the US Infantry has been involved in from the Revolutionary War to the Iraq War. To keep everybody on their toes, main gallery was designed to ramp from the first floor up to the second on a three-degree rake that spanned longer than a football field. This added a nice element of difficulty to the already structurally challenged bombed-out French farmhouse (lower pictures). Erector Sets made the rock and ground forms as well the architectural structures (buildings and bridges). Then we handed the pieces off to In-depth for the scenic work. Their skilled craftsmen brought the exhibits to life with amazing realistic-ness and accuracy.

Philadelphia Flower Show

The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society exhibit
Friday, November 18, 2011

For the third year in a row Erector Sets is honored to participate in the great tradition of the Philadelphia Flower Show. The 2008 Flower Show gave us an excellent opportunity to showcase our tradeshow skills. Occupying over 3,000 square feet of floor space and standing almost twenty feet tall, the exhibit we built for the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society may be our largest scale project to date. The “Village” was architectural in scale and contained graphic content that chronicled the Horticultural Society’s history and  involvement with the Philadelphia community.

Think of Erector Sets for all of your tradeshow needs from design to construction and installation.

Fun Projects

Superbowl Commercial, 70's Chic, 10 Foot Mouth
Friday, November 18, 2011

The summer is over and we are looking back at some of the fun jobs that we have worked on. The marketing group at THP Properties is known for their outlandish Superbowl commercials (locally aired). The concept was simple; the contestant that could jump over the house would win it. So who do you call when you need a 30 foot tall skateboard launch ramp custom built for your new campaign? Erector Sets, of course.

Grasshopper is a hip clothing boutique located in Philadelphia. They are dedicated to featuring the work of up-and-coming local designers. When the folks at Grasshopper needed changing rooms built for their new space they contacted us for something special and unique. The dressing rooms were created in a playful 70’s chic motif that looks totally far-out!

Our friends at Kitchen Sink Productions pulled us in to help out on this crazy project. This enormous ten foot mouth constructed out of carved foam, fiberglass and wood was used in an anti-chewing tobacco PSA. We just cut the curved wooden forms and left Kitchen Sink to do their fiberglass magic. The results were stunning!

Custom Cabinetry

We're Not Just Set Design
Friday, November 18, 2011

Erector Sets Inc. is proud to announce the addition of award winning craftsman Yuri Petrina to our group of talented artisans. Yuri will be heading up our custom cabinetry and fine woodworking projects.

This magnificent kitchen was featured in the book “Dream Homes – Greater Philadelphia”. It was designed by local architects Laura Blau and Paul Thompson at BluPath Design.

Also featured is the first project that Yuri completed with Erector Sets. The millwork was installed in the historic Ayers building located on Philadelphia’s Washington Square Park. Designed by our friends at Qb3 Architects, this 35 foot long combination of fixed panels and storage space is made up of sequenced matched, figured red gum veneer.

In conjunction with Qb3, this bright, clean, streamlined kitchen is the center piece of this dramatic loft space. A project like this has no margin for error and Erector Sets’ attention to detail really shines through.

Great American Country

Studio Buildout
Friday, November 18, 2011

Howdy Y’all,

We have done numerous projects for Scripps networks in the past including sets for the well known Home and Garden Television, the DIY Network and the Shop at Home Network.

Here at Erector Sets, we were excited to hear about Scripps newest venture, Great American Country. Great American Country is a Nashville based country music cable television network and is the exclusive home of The Grand Ole Opry. Working closely with our good friend, designer Gary Radin, we were asked to fabricate three new sets for shows that will be airing on GAC this month. The sets we created utilize some of the more stereotypical, rustic qualities that we associate with country music, like ax-hewn timbers, field stone walls and distressed paint, but with a close eye on the use of texture, lighting and color the sets come off as sophisticated and contemporary. These sets are a fresh take on an American classic.

Commercial Success Stories

Conversation, Carousels and Cows
Tuesday, November 15, 2011

Conversation, carousels and cows. What connection can they possibly have? They’re all TV commercial projects on the board at Erector Sets.

GMR Design needed Bayer Healthcare’s set to evoke serenity and a measured  approach to considering important health issues. TruMark Financial wanted an extravagant carousel bed to demonstrate contrast between themselves and the excesses of other financial entities.  A cow with attitude? Ok, this one might defy explanation, but when your livestock needs some cool shades with bling, you’ll know who to call.
